SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES 2003
More than 4,000 athletes from 22 Pacific Island nations took place in the 12th edition of the South Pacific Games (SPG) opening June 28 in Suva, Fiji. This year’s games were the biggest ever in the 40-year history of the SPG. The program included 32 sports, including some non-Olympic sports such as surfing
The Surfing Competition of the South Pacific Games 2003 was held over 5 days from June 30th – July 4 at Cloudbreak reef, Tavarua Island, Fiji. The competing nations were: Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji, New Caledonia, Norfolk Islands, Northern Marianas, Papua New Guinea and Samoa. The spirit of the Games remained high throughout. The waves brought together eight rival island nations for an event that will go down as a special moment in time.
Fijian long board hero from Nadi, Ian Muller, won bronze for Fiji in epic double over-head waves that pitted him up against the current Oceania Champion from Tahiti Patrick Laux, who won silver position. The winner from Tonga was Mike Burling who scored well with a long tube ride late in the final minutes which saw the lead swap back from Laux who was given the perfect area in which perform radical 're-entries' and 'cut-backs'.
The Womens Open best of three started with Tahiti and Tonga tied for 1st and Fiji and New Caledonia tied for 3rd. Anau Burling of Tonga won the Gold Medal, nudging ahead of Anne-Laure Come (Silver). Bronze went to Joel Lebreus of New Ccalendonia with Kaye Lepper of Fiji coming in fourth.
The Men's Open saw critical maneuvers being executed in a building six-foot swell that gave pitching double overhead barrels. Tahiti's Hira Teriinatoofa won Gold with a final score of 19.5/20 (his place in the final only assured after a re-qualifying round). A close second was Michael Burling of Tonga who's backhand attack crossed over well from long board to short board. Bronze went to Bret Bergagin of Norfolk Island.

Surfing is Soon to Become an Official Physical Education Sport in Hawaii’s High Schools
"MAUI leads the way to make surfing official at high schools. The state cites liability issues as main reason for not allowing surfing to be an official high school sport, though students and coaches continue to press
for recognition, stating that there are no statistics to back up liability issues."
On one side, the students say that they are unable to represent their schools in inter-collegial school meets noting that that surfing is a part of the Physical Education programs of California and should be also in Hawaii seeing that Hawaii is the birthplace of the sport.
The state's Department of Education's (DOE) Superintendent, Patricia Hamamoto, stated some of the governments concerns, which include liability. The state says that the students would be out in nature where there is no control of the environment, the conditions of the beach, waves, and sharks. They also mention supervising and funding matters. The DOE has concluded that without legislation limiting the state's liability, or the appropriation of funds to cover the costs of supervision and training, chartering surf clubs could result in potential economic liability.
Kim Ball, the owner of Hi Tech Sports on the Island of Maui in Hawaii, conducted a study, which showed that last year in Hawaii, there were 1,842 football injuries and 410 soccer injuries. Kim then called Wendell Aoki of the Hawaiian Amateur Surfing Association, the Hawaiian NGB to the ISA. He said HASA has been running surfing events in Hawaii for the last 30 years said there has never been an injury-related claim.
There will be a meeting soon about this and the ISA will keep you updated.

JAMAICA
2003 JAMAICA SURFING ASSOCIATION GROMFEST SERIES
July 19, Plumb Point Lighthouse at Palisadoes
The JSA held the first in the two contest series to declare Jamaica’s Under 15 surfing champion. Eleven surfers from Kingston, Portland, Manchester and California took part in the fiercely contested event, which included two girls. The conditions were good with 2-3 foot waves and a strong onshore wind.
The Final between Tristan English, Elim Beckford, Andrew Robinson and Ackeam Phillips was a thriller. All eyes were glued to the four surfers out in the waves. With surfers from the North and South coasts competing, a healthy spectator rivalry ensued with cheers going up as the surfers displayed their skills. At the final horn, the writing was on the wall and the spectators from the south coast rushed to the waters edge and hoisted their favorite junior to their shoulders. Ackeam Phillips had done it with Tristan in second, Andrew in third and Elim, the only girl in the finals in fourth.
The day was enjoyed by all. The final event in the series was held at Boston Beach in Portland on Saturday 26th July. Report below.

NAMIBIA
MAERSK/RADIOWAVE NAMIBIA NATIONAL SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS
July 12 – 13, 2003, Thick Lip, Swakopmund, Namibia
For the 8th year running, the Namibia Surfing Association has hosted its premier event of the year. Both the open finals and the bodyboard events showed Namibia’s surfing is moving to another level and the competition is getting tough. A total of 35 entrants felt they were hot enough to challenge the 2002 champions.
In the Open Surfing event, of the 12 competitors only 8 were able to get out past the white water, to catch the unbroken waves. The final saw a close contest between Namibia’s champion Jock Currie and Torsten Gossow. Currie eventually won the event with Gossow second and Wynand Labuschagne third. Gossow however won the coveted wave of the championship award.
Wynand Labuschagne was able to take the Junior Surfing title from Henner Rodenwoldt in second and Robert Roxin in third place. Namibia’s top junior surfer Astor Jochelson was knocked out in an earlier round after having a "hairy wipe-out" on an 8 foot plus monster. This wipe-out won him the wipe-out of
the competition award.
The Academy Surfing event saw a flood of new talent with Craig D’Oliveira taking first place from Robert Roxin in second and Franco Horn in third. These grommets were spared the big swell on Saturday and had their heats and final on a dropping swell on Sunday.
The bodyboard competitors had to take the wrath of the big swell and low tides and thrilled the spectators with their exceptional performance. Although some of the younger competitors were unable, like the open surfers to get out past the foam walls, those that did were able to pull into one barrel after another. Shaun Loubser put in a superior performance with Thorsten Viljoen and Kyle Cyriax coming close to upsetting the national champion. Cyriax was able to later win the expression session.
The prize giving was held at the Crazy Corner Café. The sponsors Maersk Sealand, Radiowave, Desert Gems, Get Wet Surf Shop, WB Mica Hardware and Hotel Deutsches Haus were thanked for their support of the environmentally clean sport, especially in Namibia’s fragile environment.

NEW ZEALAND
RIP CURL GROMSEARCH SERIES NZ
July 12 – 13, Fitzroy Beach, Taranaki
Clean offshore conditions associated with a solid half-meter swell size were the perfect ingredients for the 2nd contest of the 2003 Rip Curl Gromsearch Series. Peeling left and right peaks provided contestants with workable faces and good scoring potential.
The Gromsearch Series consists of 4, 2A rated contests and provides the Groms with their own points and ratings with the overall winner for each division being decided from the total points they have acquired from each contest.
"The Rip Curl Gromsearch series was introduced into New Zealand in 2002 to assist with Surfing New Zealand's strategic plan to establish talent identification programs and provide quality opportunities for junior surfers" said Rip Curl NZ Event Manager Leon Parkin. Last years series has helped us identify a key group of competitors who could be at the forefront of the sport in New Zealand in the near future.
"The series targets both boys and girls in the under 12 through to the under 16 age brackets and is a pathway that will help develop competitors at an earlier age and encourage a higher level of surfing at grassroots level," said Surfing New Zealand Scholastics coordinator Murray Weir. The development of surfing in these age groups is happening on a global scale and a series such as this will help New Zealand to compete more competitively at an international level against the other surfing super powers.
All competitors are looking forward to the 3rd contest of the series to be held in Gisborne in September.

WESTERN PROVINCE SCHOOLS TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
July 26, Muizenbeg Pavilion, Muizenberg, Cape Town
Seven Cape Peninsula schools took part in the event to determine the two school teams, which will represent Western Province in the Mr. Price SA Tag Team Championships at St. Francis Bay on August 30th and 31st. The format of schools Tag Team surfing differs entirely from individual contests in that instead of competitors surfing against each other, teams of five compete against another team of five in hour long heats. The winning team is the one that records the most points. Each team surfer surfs three waves, with a nominated surfer able to double his or her score. Bonus points are awarded to teams, which complete all of its rides.
With surfers of the caliber of SA Junior National Team member Brandon Roberts, and WP Junior Team members Adam Hansen, Brett Shearer and Luke Christy Smith, all taking part the competition was fierce.
The strong Constantia Waldorf Team took the honors for the third year in a row with Fish Hoek High School second, Bergvliet third and newcomers Bayside from Hout Bay fourth. Individual results below:

2003 RIP CURL BOARDMASTERS – JUNIORS & WILD CARD CHALLENGE
‘The UK’s Biggest & Best Nine Day Festival of Surfing and Skating’
July 26 - August 3, Fistral Beach, Newquay
Now in its 22nd year, the Rip Curl Boardmasters has grown from a regional surf contest into the UK’s largest free lifestyle sports festival, attracting over 100,000 visitors during the festival period for 9 days of surf and skate. Athletes from all corners of the globe battle it out for the prestigious Boardmaster’s titles, at the UK’s most famous surf break.
The Junior Boardmasters competition was staged in front of thousands of eager spectators who were treated to some spectacular surfing from the young groms. The four divisions provided some close competitive action with all surfers giving 100% in the blazing sunshine.
In the under 18’s section, Ruebyn Ash, the young Cornish surfer who is the current European youth champion, and has been given one of the organisers’ wild card selection for the main ASP Men’s 4 Star Rip Curl Boardmasters, was shown how hard it is to step up against older competitors. Whilst he was beaten into second place by winner, Matt Capel, he was by no means disgraced and made up for it by winning the Under 16’s final. Fabian Baker and Lee Couch pushed him all the way and showed great promise for British surfing in years to come.
The Under 14’s title was won by Aiden Wright, beating off stiff competition from Matt Burner and Stuart Campbell and in the Under 12’s final, Stuart went better still in his own age group by out pointing Seb Smart and Lewis Clinton into second and third placed respectively.
The last wildcard position was won by local boy and Ex English Champion, Alan Stokes. In what was a long day for the surfers with heats, semis and the final in the testing 2-3 foot surf, Alan triumphed over Lee Bartlett by the narrowest of margins winning on count back as the scores were tied.
After the wildcard presentation, there was a special award ceremony for local surfer, Dan "Mole" Joel. Dan was in Bali during the terrible bombing incident on October 12th last year and was one of the first people on the scene. The 1989 World Surfing Champion, Martin Potter awarded the Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Vellum personally signed and approved by the society’s president, Princess Alexandra.
Dan spoke of his thoughts on arriving on the scene. "It was absolute carnage. Bodies were scattered everywhere with some dead, some alive and some I just couldn’t tell. I knelt down to the first body I came to and started cardiac resuscitation (CPR) but after a while I realized that the air I was giving him was coming straight out of a huge gash in his neck. I looked at his legs and they were in tatters too." However, Dan went on to help a skeleton staff of 3 nurses and 1 doctor for 12 hours saving many lives in the process and was a true hero and ambassador for Great Britain.
