Coast to Coast Paddle For Clean Water

September 14, 2003

The San Diego, California and South Florida Chapters of the Surfrider Foundation are announcing the first ever Coast to Coast Paddle For Clean Water to take place on Sunday, September 14th, 2003. The Paddle in San Diego, home of the International Surfing Association Headquarters, will take place at 8am Pacific Standard Time at the Ocean Beach Pier, and the Paddle in Miami-Dade, FL will take place at 11am Eastern Standard Time at Marjory Stonemen Douglas Beach Park, 2nd street and Ocean Drive, in South Beach. The Paddles have been coordinated so activists will be in both oceans on each coast at the same time creating awareness for the same cause.

The Paddle For Clean Water is a noncompetitive event that consists of hundreds of local beach goers paddling out into the ocean waters in a united effort to bring awareness to the pollution problem throughout our Nation¹s coastline.

This is a free event, and all ocean enthusiasts are invited to participate in the paddle. In San Diego, we expect more than 700 paddlers to attend this year's Paddle for Clean Water with many more cheering the on from the beach. Many paddlers will use surfboards, bodyboards, and kayaks to get around the pier, but all variations of paddling devices are welcome. The more creating the paddling device, the better.

The intention of our Paddle for Clean Water is to increase public awareness and support of the value of clean and safe oceans and waterways. The preservation and protection of our Nation’s beaches and waves is a continual process, which demands the support and contributions of numerous individuals, organizations and businesses. As one of the leading grassroots environmental organizations fighting to preserve our precious coastal resources, the Surfrider Foundation activists and contributors truly are the "Keepers of the Coast".

Proceeds from this event will benefit the many Surfrider Foundation programs, including water quality testing, education outreach, beach cleanups, internships, and coastal resource mapping.

NAMIBIA

Proposed Coastal Developments at Namibia's Premier Surfspots

Walvis Bay, Namibia, an area zoned by the Walvis Bay Council as a "Conservation Area," which is adjacent to Namibia’s most famous surf spots, Farm 46 and GUNS (un-surveyed, un-serviced land) is up for sale. Sale of this land and ultimately coastal development of the area would have a negative impact the environment by posing a threat to the abundance of wildlife and geographical diversity. Furthermore, It is a concern for the surf community that development of the area may spoil the access, openness and unique quality of Namibia’s internationally renowned surf spots, Guns and Mussels.

For more information or to find out how you can help keep this Conservation Area development-free, please contact Rod Braby, President of the Namibia Surfing Association at iczmenv@iafrica.com.na.

2003 OXBOW PRO LONGBOARD WORLD CIRCUIT TOUR, Grand Final
November 7 – 16, 2003 - Raglan, New Zealand
New Zealand's world-renowned surf break, Raglan, has been identified as one of the six contest venues for the 2003 Oxbow Pro Longboard World Circuit Tour. The peeling left-hand point break has been confirmed as the location for the championship "grand final".

The Oxbow World Longboard Tour commenced on May 20 in Maresias, Brazil, followed by a heavy schedule of back-to-back contests in Portugal, Spain and France during July. The grand final will then be hosted in Raglan from November 7th through to the 16th with the 2003 world champion being crowned
in Raglan following the final.

Report submitted by Steve Ria, SNZ steveria@world-net.co.nz

Surfing New Zealand’s Relocation and Restructuring

Surfing New Zealand (SNZ) is pleased to announce the relocation of its head office to Raglan and the employment of two further administrators for the sport. The move to Raglan is seen as important to continue development of surfing in this country.

SNZ Executive Officer, Greg Townsend said "For the sport of surfing to get to the next level, it was important for SNZ to be closer to its corporate and industry sponsors while remaining central to surf locations throughout the North Island. Raglan is central and boasts New Zealand's best surf location, so what better place to be located?"

The employment of two more administrators coincides with the relocation. Ben Kennings will be working with Greg Townsend from the head office in Raglan while Steve Ria will be working out of Gisborne. Both Kennings and Ria have been involved with SNZ for a number of years on a voluntary basis and have a great working knowledge of the national sporting body.

"Sports administration today involves a great deal of work. SNZ can no longer maintain its commitment to the sport at a national level with only the help of voluntary workers. The employment of two new staff is seen as the key to continuing the development of surfing at all levels," commented Greg.

The relocation and restructuring of SNZ lays a new platform for surfing in New Zealand and provides exciting opportunities for the future.

New contact details are listed above under "3. Contact Updates."

PORTUGAL

SINTRA PORTUGAL PRO
August 27 – 31, 2003 Praia Grande, Sintra
On the last day of the Sintra Portugal Pro 2003, the huge crowd that came to watch the event went off with Manuel Centeno's victory. He made history by being the first Portuguese bodyboarder to win a contest in the Pro World Bodyboarding circuit. This event is really good for world bodyboarding, congratulations to the Federacao Portuguesa de Surf and the Municipal Chamber of Sintra.

The semi-finals saw good waves that were in the 2-4 foot range. The athletes had to struggle to catch the best waves. In the first heat, (semi-final heat) Brazilian bodyboarder, Guilherme Tamega, 6 time world champion was brilliantly eliminated by 22 year old, Manuel Centeno, who showed off consistent powerful surf.

In the second heat, (semi-final) Damien King from Australia, who is leading the "Super Tour" eliminated local Goncalo Faria in an emotional heat, with Goncalo fighting to the very end to win. It was a great heat where both athletes showed their best.

In the final, Manuel Centeno met up with Damien King. There were a lot of people watching the final in the water, with huge support for the Portuguese surfer, something that hasn't been seen in a while on this tour. Centenco corresponded in the best form not giving an inch to the number 1 bodyboarder in the world, winning an emotional final and becoming the first Portuguese bodyboarder to win a pro event on the World Bodyboarding Circuit. It is certain that whoever watched this spectacular event will never forget it.

Manuel Centeno won $USD 6,000 for his win in first place and a trip to the mecca of surf, Indonesia, for being the best Portuguese bodyboarding.

In relation to the womens event, the highlight of the event was the final between 2 Brazilian bodyboarders, Neymara Carvalho and Mayla Ventrurin. Neymara, the ISA World Surfing Games 2002 Womens bodyboard Champion, took advantage of her experience and easily won over her compatriot.

The Sintra Portugal Pro 2003 showed everybody the eliteness of world bodyboarding. Congratulations to the Federacao Portuguesa de Surf and the Municipal Chamber of Sintra on providing this spectacular event that certainly has helped the Portuguese athletes and Portugal's image in the world.

C DOG SURF CLUB WINTER GAMES

July 19 – 20, 26 – 27, 2003, Surfers Corner, Muizenberg, Cape Town.
A Western Province sanctioned event.
Over 150 surfers made up of every level of development and competitive surfing entered the 2004 C Dog Surf Club's annual Winter Games this year forcing organizers to hold what was supposed to be a two day event over two successive weekends. Despite typical midwinter cold and wet conditions Muizenberg Corner provided good 3 foot surf on all four days of competition and a total of 11 divisions were surfed up to Finals, from under 10 boys and girls to elite Junior Pro and Senior Pro divisions.

C Dog Surf Club coach and WP surfer Cass Collier showed his class in winning the Senior Pro final from SA Junior team member Damien Fahrenfort with former WP Champion, Ian Armstrong third ahead of another SA Junior team member, Brandon Roberts.

The Junior Pro was won by Aran Moore from Jaco Steyn, Kwezi Qika and Avro Johnson. Cathy Olmesdahl won the Womens final from Tarryn Chudleigh, Holly Armstrong and Beth Sharp and in the Under 20 boys group Chris Molde beat Seymour Wood, Luke Parr and Byron Monkrief respectively.

Other title winners were Lisa Mace in the Junior Girls, Ashwin Roberts in the Under 16 Boys and Tarryn Chudleigh who competed in the Under 14 Boys group and beat all of them, David Solomon in the Under 12 Boys division, Holly Armstrong who took the Under 12 Girls title and Hilton Cleophas and Natasha Bernstein who won the Under 10 Boys and Girls titles respectively.

The C Dog Surf Club caters for surfers of all ages and levels of competency and prides itself on its work with young competitors from disadvantaged communities in the False Bay area of Cape Town. Since most of the young surfers who belong to the club do not own their own equipment, hard work by club administrators Shiraz Moosa, Faiza Kippie, Cecil Solomon as well as coaches Cass Collier, Ian Armstrong and Jonathan Rosslind, have seen the club grow to over 150 members in just two years.

C Dog Surf Club still needs equipment such as good surfboards and wetsuits to function and grow and are hoping that events such as the Winter Games will attract a generous sponsor in the future. The annual Winter Games is just one of the projects that the Club presents throughout the year to encourage as many potential surfers to join them each Saturday morning at Muizemberg to learn to "catch and ride a wave".

BILLABONG POLAR ICE JUNIOR SERIES

August 8 – 10, Jeffreys Bay Point, Event #5 of 5

Super talented 15 year-old Durban surfer, Jordan Smith, clinched the prestige U/20 boys division in the Billabong Polar Ice Junior Series at Jeffreys Bay on Sunday, to become the youngest holder of the title in the six year history of the series. ‘Jordy’, as his peers know him, placed second in the finals of both U/20 and U/16 divisions in the fifth and final event on the 2003 series. This was good enough to rewrite the record books in the older category, but left him tied for first place in the U/16 boys ratings on his best four results.

That title was awarded to Brandon Roberts whose fifth result was stronger, and Jordy had to settle for a repeat of the runner-up position in the U/16’s that he achieved as a 14 year-old last year.

Roberts, from Fish Hoek, was one of three Capetonians to secure titles in the country’s most popular junior surfing circuit. Klee Strachan was 2003’s outstanding competitor, winning four of the five events in the U/14 boys division – the only surfer to achieve a full house of 4 000 ratings points – while Stacey Guy recorded two wins and three runner-up spots in capturing the U/20 girls crown.

Shaun Joubert wrapped up the U/12 division with his third victory of the year in the well shaped one to 1.3 meter (3-4 foot) waves at the Point at Jeffreys Bay on Sunday afternoon to repel the challenge of Dale Staples, who finished runner-up in both the 2003 ratings and the final event.

In the final Jordy placed second behind Dylan Stone with Damien Fahrenfort clinching third place in the event and the ratings in his first year in the premier division, and Matthew Kruger securing fourth place on the day.

Guy placed second behind Tara Hossack in the girls event, with highly talented East Londoner Rosanne Hodge third and Tammy Lee Smith fourth. Jessica Matthews (did not attend the final event but her results in the first four gave her second in the ratings ahead of Smith.

Roberts, a lowly 13th in the U/16 ratings last year, placed fourth in Sunday’s final behind first time winner Rudy Palmboom, Jordy and Josh Redman. But that was better than Jordy’s seventh place finish in this division at the Victoria Bay event at the beginning of June and secured the series crown for the likeable Capetonian.

Strachan was the star of the final event, constantly finding the best waves and performing one radical maneuver after another as they peeled down the point. Chad du Toit, a three-time U/12 champ, did well to secure the runner-up spot in both the event and the ratings in his first year in the U/14 category with close rival, Jaco Steyn failing to reach the final and relegated to third in the year end ratings.

Joubert, who placed fourth in the final of the U/14’s, fought a see-saw battle with local lad Staples throughout the U/12 final before clinching the title and becoming the first surfer from Mossel Bay to secure a series crown.

Joseph Krone, the surfer from Mossel Bay, whose miraculous escape from a shark attack on Friday and plucky decision to continue competing in the event being staged at the scene of the incident has made headlines worldwide, was eventually eliminated in the semi-finals of the U/16 boy’s event.

Competing on a borrowed surfboard after his own was bitten into three pieces by the shark, Krone placed 5th overall – two positions better than the seventh spot he achieved in the corresponding event last year.

The sixth annual Billabong Polar Ice Junior Series started in Durban in February, followed by Cape Town in March, St Mikes on the KZN South Coast in April, Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape in June before culminating in Jeffreys Bay from 8-10 August.

MR PRICE SA SCHOOLS SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

August 30 – 31, 2003, Main Beach, Cape St Francis, Eastern Cape

Months of dedicated practice paid off for Constantia Waldorf school at the weekend when they beat defending champions Glenwood of Durban to become the first Cape Town school to win the Mr Price SA Schools Championships since the event began 10 years ago.

The Constantia Waldorf team, made up of Chris Bond (captain), Brett Shearer, Adam Hansen, Luke Parr and Luke Christy Smith and manager Gaile Shearer, have come a long way since reaching the semi finals in 2001 and finishing fourth last year.

This time round the Waldorf surfers were determined showed character and focus in overcoming an interference call in their semi final to make the final and then comprehensively defeat a Glenwood side which included newly crowned World Under 16 champion, Jordy Smith and four KZN provincial surfers.

Waldorfs' victory earned them an all expenses paid trip to Reunion in May next year where they will represent the country as the SA Schools champions, courtesy of Mr Price.

Another WP School, Fish Hoek High, finished a close third only, 8 points behind Glenwood and 5.1 points ahead of former SA school champions, Hudson Park of East London. Fish Hoek High School surfer, Klee Strachan, was named as the most consistent surfer at the event. Durban High School and Point High of Mossel Bay were fifth and sixth respectively, Northwood of Durban was seventh and Selbourne of East London came eighth.

The annual Mr Price SA Schools Championships involved 16 schools drawn from KZN, Western Cape and Eastern Cape. There are no individual champions and the Surfing South Africa contest is run using the International Surfing Association Tag Team format.

SURF GIRL DAY

August 2, Fistral Beach, Newquay

Plenty of smiles were evident as the very first Surf Girl day happened at Fistral Beach on 2nd August. The sun was shinning (at long last), the surf was pumping and the SG crew was on hand to put the girls through their paces. Over a hundred girls turned up for a fun filled lesson with top instructors Tracy Boxall and Lisa Bartlett. Roving Ed Robyn Davies was there to give some professional advice to the beginners. A good day was had by all. And many thanks to all the companies who supplied products for the goodie bags, it was most appreciated by the girls. The day was put on in association with the English Surfing Federation Surf School (www.EnglishSurfSchool.com), many thanks to them also.

The BSA is holding another Surf Girl Day on 20th September for first timers as well as those girls who want to take surfing to a higher level.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS BPSA EVENT

May 14 – 17, 2004, Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

BPSA together with TTaL and Sri Lankan Airlines are organizing a professional surfing event in Sri Lanka, as a pre cursor for the British Season. Funding and sponsorship is in place for the first 5 years of the event. The 2004 event will be the beginning of an on going program to incorporate Sri Lanka as part of the British Professional Surfing Circuit, as well as to promote Arugam Bay on the East Coast.

A promotional and fact finding trip which took place in June 2003 and included Alan Stokes, Mark Harris, Spencer Hargraves and the BPSA officials proved to be a great success, scoring excellent 3 to 5 foot surf.

Surfers wishing to qualify to compete at this event will have to make the top 16 on the Headworx BPSA UK Tour 2003. These surfers will compete against the top eight Sri Lankan surfers, four wild cards and four qualifiers from the trials, which will be made up from the top four local surfers at each event on the Headworx BPSA UK Tour 2003.

Arugam Bay is famous for its legendary right-handers, and receives the same swell’s that hit Indonesia mid year. The best time to visit this part of the country is between May and October when the wind is predominantly offshore. There are three popular Point breaks within 20min of each other, one very good reef, breaks anything from 2-6 feet and provides a wall that will barrel to give you a 400 meter ride and the two other breaks will also provide good quality surf. Sri Lanka is a surfing destination with good surfing all year around.
