ISA WORLD SURFING GAMES 2004

The ISA encourages nations that are considering hosting the WSG 2004 to express their interest by a return email to the Head Office of the ISA (E-mail: lindsay@isasurf.org). Any ISA NGB has the right to organize the WSG provided they fulfil the requirements put together by the ISA Executive Committee. The ISA Executive is interested in making a decision as soon as they see a serious, committed and well funded proposal from an NGB that is deemed able to deliver the WSG in proper time and fashion.

INDONESIA

The International Surfing Association would like to extend its deepest condolences to the people of Bali and people of other nations who have been impacted by the tragic events of October 12th at the Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar in the heart of Kuta. This horrific event has touched deep to the soul of the global surfing community. Kuta, Bali, a town known around the world for its surfing, has given much to the surfing world. There is hardly any surfer who does not have personal memories of this amazing place or listened to wondrous stories about it.

A group of expatriate surfers who live in Bali and were volunteers at the Sanglah Hospital during the crisis are organizing a non profit foundation (a Yayasan) called "Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi' to raise funds to build a permanent burns and trauma unit at Sangalah Hospital in Denpasar. The global surfing community can help the people of Bali by contributing to the foundation.

While it may seem to be too late to build such a facility after the bombings, it should be looked at as a permanent resource and an important infrastructure project to serve both the local community and the tourist industry. For more information, please visit http://www.yamp.com/balifund/. If you have any questions, please contact the Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi foundation directly at reachout@dps.centrin.net.id or Tony Wales (CEO Quiksilver Indonesia 1997 to 2001) at surfershelpbali@aol.com

September 28 –29, 2002, Gisbourne, New Zealand

Approximately 115 of New Zealand’s top U12, U14 and U165 surfers were in Gisbourne over September 28 and 29 to compete in the 2nd contest of the Rip Curl Gromsearch Series. This event consists of three 2A rated events, which are aimed at providing competitors with contest experience, career direction and to identify future surfing talent at a grassroots level. The first contest kicked off in July in Taranaki, off the West Coast of New Zealand.

During a break in the finals, New Zealand's elite surfers, Bobby Hansen, Blair Stewart, Jay Quinn and aerial specialist Jay Papworth treated the crowd to 20 minutes of explosive surfing during an expression session. Not only did this wow the crowd, it also enabled the new generation of surfers the opportunity to see high profile surfing at its best.

SOUTH AFRICA

2002 REEF WETSUITS SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Sanctioned by Surfing South Africa)

September 30 – October 5th, 2002, Big Bay Bloubergstrand in the Western Cape, South Africa

A determined Kwa-Zulu Natal team secured a brilliant seventh consecutive win in a row in tricky 1 to 2 meter surf and rainy conditions at Bloubergstrand on Saturday (October 5th) when they overwhelmed hosts Western Province to win the 2002 Reef Wetsuits SA Junior Championships. A solid team effort from Border put them in third spot behind Western Province and earned them the Best Team accolade.

The under 18 showdown was a true reflection of the caliber of South African surfing with all of the finalists current National Team members. Warwick Wright of KZN showed the form that earned him the Junior World Surfing Title at the ISA Quiksilver World Games in June when he beat South African and KZN teammates Daniel Redman, Ricky Basnett and Andrew Groenewald into second, third and fourth places respectively.

Western Province's only gold medal went the way of Tara Hossack, a member of the SA Junior team in Australia in July. KZN surfer Josh Redman won the under 16 Boys title beating two WP surfers, Brandon Roberts and Damien Fahrenfort, into second and third spot respectively.

One of South Africa's most determined competitors, Rosanne Hodge of Border, surfed consistently throughout the event and was rewarded with victory in the under 16 girl’s category. She was also named Surfer of the Contest. The under 14 boy’s division was dominated by KZN’s top two seeds, Jordan Smith and Rudy Palmboom. In the under 12 division, Southern Cape surfer, Shaun Joubert beat Chad du Toit of KZN.

All seven provincial associations affiliated to Surfing South Africa (SSA) were invited to send teams to the championships. A South African Junior Academy Team made up of surfers from all over the country that are members of the National Development Academy also competed in the event.

The Reef Wetsuits South African Junior Surfing Championships have been held since 1996, when they first took place in Durban. Since then, the tournament has grown in stature. The individual titles as well as the Team Trophy at this contest are regarded as the most prestigious junior titles in SA surfing.

EUROJUNIOR (European Surfing Federation Event)

September 21 – 29, Mimizan, France

After ten days of small surf in Mimizan, France, Reubyn Ash of Bude, UK was crowned under 14 European Champion, with the English team finishing a respectable third place.

France made the most of their home turf advantage to retain the team title for the third consecutive time. Portugal narrowly took second place. Great individual performances came from St. Agnes's Josh Ward who suffered due to the small waves in the final, placing fourth. Bude's Tazmin Sheppard also made the grand final of the ladies bodyboard and the Isle of Wights, Jonny Friar made the final of the under 18's surf before the event had to be cancelled due to a lack of waves. The cancellation of the event cost the English team a second place finish as strong results were expected from the seven surfers and bodyboarders that were still in the event.

Team manager Rob Barber commented, "The team made the most out of the conditions and genuinely worried the top opposition. We were tactically sound with some great individual performances. The competition's given us a great building block for the future. We're very grateful to our sponsors Rip Curl clothing and Dirty Dog sunglasses who supported the team."

SURFING INJURY QUESTIONAIRE
